Halloween Treats: Pop-top Surprise

Candy is fun, but surprise treats are even better! Repurpose pop-top cans to create a fun treat that will delight kids of all ages.




Supplies needed: Safety can opener, super tacky tape, liquid adhesive (example: Glossy Accents), thin cardboard (cardstock pack inserts work well), and your choice of cardstock, stamps, inks, embellishments such as ribbons or punches, and candy or other small treats.




Flip can over and open the bottom (non pop-top side) using a safety can opener. This type of opener will open the can flush with the sides without (usually) leaving sharp edges. Safety can openers are not perfect, so be sure to inspect for any metal slivers or other hazards . Empty out contents, then wash and dry can thoroughly.

The base layer of cardstock should measure 1 3/4" x 8", so allow for margins if you want to include different layers. Stamp as desired. I used the Quick and Easy Candy Corn Background; stamped in orange, only the bottom section needs to be colored in yellow.

Apply super tacky tape to the reverse side of cardstock label.

Begin adhering label, making sure that seam will not face front of can as determined by pop-top. Carefully smooth as you go to eliminate bubbles in the finished label.

Trace the bottom of the can onto thin cardboard and cut out circle.

Flip can over and fill about 2/3 with candy. If you are not using pre-wrapped candy, it is a good idea to enclose candy in a plastic baggie to be sure it is not exposed to adhesive. Apply a thin line of liquid adhesive to rim of can and then carefully position new cardboard bottom. Note: I've tried multiple adhesives for this step, including super glue, and this one gives the best results by far.

Decorate as desired with punches and embellishments. Another option is to use a can which has already been opened for a mini tin pail effect.

The final product -- Altered Halloween Tins. No need to purchase pre-made Halloween tins when you have a great source right in your own pantry!
